Although social interaction is a key part of human life, many people struggle to understand their own emotions and those of others. This emotional gap can lead to misunderstandings, conflict, and disconnection. Especially when physical distance or communication barriers make it harder to read emotional cues.
My role: This was a collaborative academic project developed within a university setting. I was actively involved in all stages of the project while also taking initiative to guide the team.
We explored how technology can enhance emotional connection across distance, drawing inspiration from biofeedback and light-based art.
Through research on emotion recognition and color perception, we found that emotional states are complex and culturally variable—so we combined color, text, and minimal visuals for clearer communication.
We conducted a questionnaire with about 50 participants to evaluate the relevance of our concept and identify user needs. Results highlighted two key audiences—young people and those in long-distance relationships—who value emotional awareness but often struggle to interpret others’ feelings in real time. Benchmarking revealed few similar projects, mostly in healthcare. We then developed user personas and journeys to guide our design decisions.
