"White Nights" by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a story of loneliness, dreams, and fleeting connections. It follows a solitary dreamer who, during four nights in St. Petersburg, forms an intense bond with a woman named Nastenka. The novel explores the contrast between reality and fantasy, capturing the beauty and heartbreak of brief yet profound encounters.
During the process, it was important for me to maintain a traditional yet irreverent twist—a balance between minimalism and beauty. The chapter-opening images are all black and white, reflecting the novel’s exploration of night and day. As the story unfolds, these images follow the journey, transitioning from light (daytime) to dark (night) and back to light again.
With this project, my goal was to capture the duality of the dreamer’s reality—the lifeless, bleak black-and-white world he inhabits versus the vivid, fragmented dream world of his memories.
